ICU Expansion Project Begins
January 2019 marked a historic milestone for the Pediatric Intensive Care Foundation and the unit it supports: the formal commencement of a major expansion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at ul. Szpitalna in Poznan.
The expansion project — years in the planning and made possible by the sustained fundraising efforts of the Foundation and the generosity of our donors — aims to significantly increase the capacity and modernity of the ward. The project includes the refurbishment of existing spaces, the creation of new patient bays, and the installation of state-of-the-art infrastructure to support the most advanced clinical equipment.
The Foundation has played a central role in supporting this project financially and logistically, working closely with the Medical University and hospital management to ensure the expansion meets the highest standards of 21st-century paediatric intensive care.

Regional Anaesthesia Kit Purchased
The Foundation funded the acquisition of the Safira regional anaesthesia system — a cutting-edge device that allows our anaesthesiologists to perform highly precise, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks in paediatric patients. This technique significantly reduces the need for general anaesthesia, lowers post-operative pain, and speeds up recovery for children undergoing complex procedures.
The Safira kit represents one of the most significant single equipment investments the Foundation has made, and its impact on patient outcomes has been immediate and measurable.
Echocardiographic Probe for Critical Care
Cardiac complications represent one of the most serious and time-sensitive challenges in the Pediatric ICU. The Foundation funded the purchase of a specialist echocardiographic probe designed specifically for critically ill children — enabling rapid, high-quality cardiac imaging at the bedside without the need to transport fragile patients to a separate imaging department.
This equipment has transformed the speed and accuracy of cardiac assessment in the unit, allowing our team to identify and respond to life-threatening cardiac conditions with unprecedented efficiency.
Preparing for the Infection Season
Each autumn and winter, the Pediatric ICU faces its most demanding period as respiratory viruses, bacterial infections, and seasonal illnesses place enormous pressure on the unit's capacity. The Foundation works proactively each year to ensure the ward is fully prepared — coordinating with medical staff to pre-stock critical supplies, supporting additional staffing during peak periods, and running public awareness campaigns on prevention and early intervention.
Preparation is one of the most effective tools we have. By anticipating demand and acting in advance, we help ensure that no child is turned away during the most critical weeks of the year.
Staff Training & Development Programme
The Foundation's commitment to excellence extends beyond equipment. We believe that the people caring for our patients are the most important asset of the unit — and we invest accordingly. Our ongoing staff development programme supports specialist training courses, conference attendance, simulation-based learning, and access to the latest research in paediatric critical care.
In recent years, members of our team have attended major European and international paediatric intensive care conferences, returning with new knowledge and techniques that directly benefit our patients.
850,000 PLN in Equipment Funded
A landmark achievement in the Foundation's history: by 2018, the total value of specialist medical equipment funded through the Foundation had exceeded 850,000 PLN. This figure represents over a decade of sustained fundraising, donor generosity, and strategic investment in the Pediatric ICU.
From monitoring systems and ventilators to specialist diagnostic tools and procedural equipment, each purchase has directly contributed to better outcomes for the critically ill children in our care. We are enormously proud of this milestone — and determined to go further.
1% Tax Campaign — Every Year Counts
Each year, the Foundation runs its annual 1% tax designation campaign, encouraging Polish taxpayers to direct 1% of their income tax to our KRS number (0000269686) when filing their annual PIT return. This mechanism costs taxpayers nothing extra — the money comes from what they already owe the state — but its cumulative impact on the Foundation's budget is significant.
We are deeply grateful to every individual who has taken the time to designate their 1% to us. If you have not yet done so, we encourage you to consider it — it takes less than a minute and makes a real difference to the children in our care.
